Light and shadow are not opposites. Rather, they are close and intimate partners.
If light highlights a subject, the shadow sculpts it.
On a tour of the old medina of Tangier, take a moment to observe the juxtaposition of volumes and blocs, the narrowness and the distance between the buildings, from the tiny to the wide alleyways where the light penetrates and the shadow traces every detail meticulously.
From illuminated houses, balconies, door portals and windows, the perfect duo of light and shadow trace every line, giving the observer an opportunity to perceive her surroundings in a particular way: the falling shadow of the forge over a white surface, the bright blue sky marking the union of two houses through a gradian line and the glow of light that signifies an intersection of alleyways.
What at first might appear chaotic, results in artistic creation.
