Taste of the Moors in Venice

(October _ – _, 2026)

5 days / 5 nights

DAY 1October, 2026: Venice (Thursday)

MEALS: Dinner

Airport pickup from Marco Polo international airport. Welcome dinner that evening at our 5-star hotel overlooking the Grand Canal.

Eating Venetian cuisine whilst overlooking the Grand Canal is “una esperienza indimenticabile” (an unforgettable experience).

DAY 2October, 2026: Venice (Friday)

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Moorish theme today: morning walking tour plus put your investigative skills to the test and see how many less obvious Moorish ‘signs’ you can detect.

After breakfast you’ll go on a morning tour of Venice looking for evidence of the Moorish presence amid the wonders of the city of canals. St Mark’s Basilica. The Doge’s Palace. The Grand Staircase. The Bridge of Sighs. These are the ‘must see’ sites you will visit while in Venice, but it is the less obvious signs of Moorish presence you will enjoy spotting along the way – sculptured bas-relief of Moorish themes on walls, stone decorations on the facades of houses and churches, Moorish heads as doorknobs. See the bronze ‘Moors’ on top of the St Marks Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio). You’ll find the Moors in famous artwork by Tintoretto, Bellini and Carpaccio, and of course in Shakespeare’s Othello – artistic expressions of Moorish influence in Venice. There is plenty to see during your three days in Venice. A light lunch will be provided today. Afterwards will be a cooking class on Venetian food that includes ingredients introduced by the Moors.

St Marco’s Piazza in Venice. Sometimes this is completely flooded by high tides.

DAY 3October, 2026: Venice > Islands (Saturday)

MEALS: B

Moorish theme today: Like the Moors you will be exploring the waterways in and around Venice and its islands.

After breakfast, you visit Murano and Burano, two of the seven islands near Venice, joined by bridges. The island of Murano is famous for its artisanal glassmaking including everything from chandeliers, to vases, paperweights, figurines and jewellery. You won’t need as long to explore Burano – known for its exquisite handmade lace which can be seen in clothing, tablecloths, handbags, fans and collars. (Be warned, Burano lace does not come cheap.) After lunch you’ll return to your hotel in the late afternoon, and the rest of the day and night are free.

Beautiful Burano

DAY 4October, 2026: Venice (Sunday)

MEALS: B & D

Moorish theme today: Moorish dinner theme

This is a free day where you can take yourself to see sites there hasn’t been time to visit so far. The hotel concierge is an excellent source for suggestions and places for lunch. Perhaps enjoy an aperitivo and cicchetti (snacks) by the side of a canal watching the sun go down in the former jewish quarter. Just be sure you are back in plenty of time for the farewell dinner (with a Moorish theme).

Waiter serving aperitivos near one of Venice’s many bridges.

DAY 5 – October, 2026: Venice > Rome (Monday)

MEALS: B & D

After breakfast there is the high-speed train trip of about 4 hours to Rome, where you’ll stay at Hotel St Anselmo on the Aventine Hill (one of the famous Seven Hills of Rome).  Depending on the arrival time, you might like to walk to the Aventine Keyhole – a peephole that presents an amazing view of three countries. Be back for dinner together.

DAY 6October, 2026: Rome > Casablanca (Tuesday)

MEALS: B (in Rome)

After breakfast, the tour continues with a flight out of Rome airport to Casablanca.

Stage One of this tour ends with checkout

at the Rome accommodation.

……………………….

Stage Two: Morocco!

Volubilis with many wildflowers – in October you might see white narcisus for example.

Flavour of the Romans in Morocco

(October TBA, 2026)

6 days / 5 nights

DAY 6 cont. – October, 2026: Casablanca > holy town (Tuesday)

MEALS: Dinner (in Moulay Idriss Zerhoune)

From Casablanca airport you drive to Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, a holy town close to Volubilis. Non-Moslems were not permitted to enter this holy town until about 1986. A short drive from Morocco’s spiritual capital Fez, it is one of the most beautiful villages in the world. This is the site of the tomb of Idris, Morocco’s first significant Islamic ruler (off limits to visitors), of Morocco’s only cylindrical minaret, and the many stairways, and terraces provide wonderful vantage points for photos.

You will stay two nights at Dar Zerhoune, owned by a New Zealander. Please note, it is cosy, not flashy, and all accommodation depends on availability at time of booking.

(For those joining us for the first time in Morocco for this stage of the tour, we may need to make alternative arrangements to get you to Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, depending on your circumstances.)

On the way to Volubilis from Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, seen in the background. Moroccans find this image hilarious for some reason.

DAY 7 – October, 2026: Moulay Idriss Zerhoune > Volubilis (Wednesday)

MEALS: B L & D

Roman theme today: Volubilis is a remarkable example of Roman urban planning.

After breakfast, you travel by donkey (unless you are unsure about donkeys and prefer to be driven) from the holy city to Volubilis. The ancient Roman settlement is close by and a short guided tour is planned. You’ll later picnic in, or near, an olive grove (with food cooked using some herbs and spices commonly used in Roman cuisine), and will have walked through the example of nearly perfect Roman street planning. Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage site and you can read more about it at https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2129/exploring-roman-morocco/#

Return to Moulay Idriss Zerhoune for a second night at the dar.

There is also a Roman bath near Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, adjacent to which is a tall Australian gum tree, which you will visit (time permitting) at some point during your stay in the area.

DAY 8 – October, 2026: Moulay Idriss Zerhoune > Asilah (Thursday)

MEALS:  B L & D

Roman theme today: The northern part of Morocco was a bastion of Roman power too. You visit Lixus, another Roman settlement, on the way.

After breakfast, your destination is Asilah (about 3-hour drive without stops). However you will stop along the way and have lunch. The road takes you through the Atlas Mountains and along the Atlantic coast with many photo opportunities as you go. Perhaps you will visit a Marabout (shrine of a holy man) – you will certainly drive past some. You will visit Lixus too, another Roman site where Hercules was said to have completed one of his 12 labours.

Stay at Dar Ambrosia with its chic interior design or perhaps Dar Manara, with its Andalusian flair, both at Asilah.

DAY 9 – October, 2026: Asilah > Permaculture farm > Tangier (Friday)

MEALS: B L & D

Roman theme today: scents with an ancient Roman twist – roses, lavender, quinces, pomegranates, grapes, basil, rosemary, cinnamon and myrrh.

After breakfast, you’ll visit a permaculture farm where you can make your own perfume. An expert will guide you through the process step-by-step, assisting you to create a unique scent from their high-quality ingredients. If it is possible to have lunch there too, using the organic produce of the farm, we will include that too. You’ll then continue on to Tangier.

Stay at La Maison de Tanger (or equivalent, depending on availability) where you’ll enjoy dinner that evening.

Consider buying a decorative incense or perfume bottle for your permaculture Roman scent concoction.

DAY 10 – October, 2026:  Tangier (Saturday)

MEALS: B & D

Roman theme today: explore the Roman history of Tangier with a guide

After breakfast, you’ll have a leisurely morning to wander through the medina to discover Roman influences that still survive in Tangier – in the medina and elsewhere – for example, the Punic Roman necropolis (with tombs carved into the rock) that overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar. The afternoon is free.

Be back at the accommodation to rendezvous for the final dinner together.
